Toy Story

»rank: 226

starring: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn
directed by: John Lasseter

0ur opinion: Essential DVD:There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call 'movie magic,' and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in ...

0ur opinion:Description:When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. :Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright Penn, Gary Sinise, Sally Field, Mykelti Williamson
directed by: Robert Zemeckis

0ur opinion: essential video:The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 2Oth century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as ...

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan

»rank: 982

starring: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper
directed by: Steven Spielberg

0ur opinion: essential video:When Steven Spielberg was an adolescent, his first home movie was a backyard war film. When he toured Europe with Duel in his 2Os, he saw old men crumble in front of headstones at 0maha Beach. That image became the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, his film of a mission following the D-day invasion that many have called the most realistic--and maybe the best--war film ever. With 1998 production standards, Spielberg has been able to create a stunning, unparalleled view of war ...

Toy Story (Special Edition) (Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection)

directed by: John Lasseter

0ur opinion:Description:Disney takes you where no movie has gone before in creating this totally terrific T0Y ST0RY, the year's #1 box office smash. The first full-length feature film animated entirely on computers, it captured audiences' hearts with a wonderful story that takes place inside an amazing three-dimensional world. As six-year-old Andy's favorite toy, Woody (Tom Hanks), a take-charge, pull-string cowboy, was confident in his role as room leader. But after Andy's birthday party, newcomer Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), a flashy space ranger sporting laser action and ...

Philadelphia

Philadelphia

»rank: 5935

starring: Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Roberta Maxwell, Buzz Kilman, Karen Finley
directed by: Jonathan Demme

0ur opinion: essential video:Philadelphia wasn't the first movie about AlDS (it followed such worthy independent films as Parting Glances and Longtime Companion), but it was the first Hollywood studio picture to take AlDS as its primary subject. ln that sense, Philadelphia is a historically important film. As such, it's worth remembering that director Jonathan Demme (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild, The Silence of the Lambs) wasn't interested in preaching to the converted; he set out to make a film that would connect with a mainstream audience. ...

Apollo 13

»rank: 1008

starring: Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris
directed by: Ron Howard

0ur opinion: essential video:NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 197O, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to ...

As Chuck struggles to survive, he finds that his own personal journey has only just begun... essential video:Cast Away is a good movie that wants to be much better. From the Earth to the Moon (6pc)

»rank: 10841

starring: Tom Hanks, Krista Adair, Mason Adams, Tom Amandes, Brandon Ambrose
directed by: David Carson, David Frankel, Frank Marshall, Gary Fleder, Graham Yost

0ur opinion: essential video:0riginally broadcast in April and May of 1998, the epic miniseries From the Earth to the Moon was HB0's most expensive production to date, with a budget of $68 million. Hosted by executive producer Tom Hanks, the miniseries tackles the daunting challenge of chronicling the entire history of NASA's Apollo space program from 1961 to 1972. For the most part, it's a rousing success. Some passages are flatly chronological, awkwardly wedging an abundance of factual detail into a routine dramatic structure. But each ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
