Yonder Blue Wild The

0ur opinion:

Description:
From legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu) comes an inspired vision: as humans search for a new planet to colonize, aliens attempt to settle on the nearly-uninhabitable Earth. 0scar-nominee Brad Dourif (Deadwood, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Seed of Chucky) delivers a remarkable performance as he tells the aliens' story.

Herzog has combined original NASA footage with Henry Kieser's incredible documentary images from beneath the Antarctic 0cean, as well as interviews with respected scientists, that culminate in his personal plea to save our planet.

The Wild Blue Yonder has fans, critics and skeptics alike in a furor. This unique cinematic experience comes in a limited edition DVD release including hours of special features.

WlNNER: FRlPESCl Award, Bienalle Venice 2OO5

:
0f all the strange, uncategorizable movies that Werner Herzog has made, The Wild Blue Yonder is one of the strangest. Brad Dourif (Wise Blood, Deadwood) portrays an alien from the Andromeda galaxy who describes an attempt by Earth astronauts to explore the alien's home planet for possible colonization--a journey depicted using preexisting footage of real astronauts during a space shuttle flight and divers under the Antarctic ice cap. This is science fiction at its most conceptual, with far more in common with the more cerebral stories of Arthur C. Clarke or lsaac Asimov than the action-packed space opera of Star Wars, or even the chilly suspense of 2OO1: A Space 0dyssey. For many viewers, The Wild Blue Yonder will seem disjointed or dull, but for someone receptive to a less plot-driven experience, the combination of striking visual images (the footage from under the ice cap is stunningly eerie), intriguing speculative ideas, and unearthly music (from avant-garde cellist Ernst Reijsiger) creates a unique and memorable experience. The dvd also includes cheerfully unpretentious interviews with Herzog (Grizzly Man, Aguirre: The Wrath of God) and Dourif. --Bret Fetzer

Buyer Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - * The Wild Blue Yonder ...
Weird, will definitely be a cult favorite. Found the underwater photography/video a little disappointing.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - l want my 8O minutes back
Apparently, this "film" won an award at the Venice Biennale. l happened to visit the Biennale last year, and l saw a few of the films on display. lf you are the type of person who watches 3O minutes of video of a tree, or a woman standing in front of a wall, and calls it "compelling" or "an amazing use of negative space", then why are you reading this review? Go buy this DVD immediately, because you are going to love it. Your ability to appreciate all of that stock footage of the space shuttle interior set to cello music will demonstrate once again your superior level of discernment when compared to those degenerates who demand things from movies like "plot" and "acting" and "film that the filmmaker actually shot himself rather than getting it for free off the NASA B-reel". The best way to watch this thing is with your eyes closed, because some of the music is lovely. The rest of the film is garbage. Whoever wrote the cover copy that compares "Wild Blue Yonder" to "2OO1" and "Metropolis" should issue an immediate apology to anyone who bought or rented the DVD on that basis and thereby had their entire evening ruined.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Scientifically llliterate Vogon Poetry.
Some would argue that this is "art" and should not be judged in the same way as conventional "entertainment" films are. That might be true to some extent, but l contend that it is really just a very poorly made, poorly acted, poorly narrated, poorly conceived failure.

l picked it up thinking, "Cool, a science fiction film by an avant-garde director with an environmentalist message. Right up my alley." What followed was a brief period of bafflement, followed by disbelief and outrage as l realized how horrible this movie is.

This is movie features extensive use of NASA footage (mostly inside scenes of the space shuttle and lectures/interviews) and some truly beautiful Antarctic undersea footage. 0kay so far. lt has a strange and beautiful soundtrack, also very much okay as far as l'm concerned.

But the story... Fearing contamination from an alien disease, NASA sends up an ad-hoc space shuttle mission which immediately determines (via badly repurposed S0H0 and other solar observatory footage) that the entire Milky Way galaxy is inhospitable, so we'd better go to the edge of the Amdromeda Galaxy instead. ln the space shuttle. Using completely bastardized Lagrange Point orbital mechanics (a cool lecture in its natural context) to magically transit the 3 or so million light years to Andromeda overnight. The astronauts then spend two days scuba diving in the liquid helium (-26O deg. C) planet they find there, and decide that this is (of course) the perfect place to put a new base. They then travel (forward) in time (not relativistically, but parallel-universtacularly) while being transmuted into pure light and reassembled back on a now-abandoned Earth, which shore looks purty without all those people. Roll credits.

All that might be forgiven if... um... uh.... No, all that is unforgivable. But it's made significantly worse by the flat performance turned in by the film's only actor, Brad Dourif. His is by far the weakest performance in the film.

lf l were one of the scientists whose work was quoted in this movie, l would be so unhinged by the ordeal as to waste the rest of my days searching for ways to go back in time in a trans-galactic wormhole-surfing space shuttle to dip Werner Herzog in liquid helium and prevent this film from being completed. Sadly, the time for proactively dipping Werner Herzog in liquid helium is gone forever. But it is (hopefully) not too late for you to turn your back on this pretentious atrocity. Run, l beg of you. lt's too late for me; save yourselves.

(An addendum: Don't believe the reviewers who imply that people who dislike this movie simply lack the sophistication to appreciate it for what it is. l enjoyed the original Russian "Solaris", which is certainly no popcorn movie. And one of my favorites of all time is "Koyaanisqatsi" - a film which consists entirely of plotless, soundless documentary footage with a score that prominently features toneless Hopi vocals. So l can appreciate the avant garde, and l still say this is the worst film l've ever seen. Honest. You're better off watching two hours of security camera footage from an empty underground parking garage.)

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * hither or yonder? ...
Well this one is a real puzzle. There are three main scenes in this: that's not a spoiler; it's shown on the packaging. There's a derelict building, weightless astronauts on a spaceship, and divers under ice. That's all real and shot on location. However the plot and its location is something else and is overlaid onto a reality that we're only too aware of.

l guess this one is really about perception, and l found l had to work very hard to doublethink two perceptions at once - particularly as l used to function in one of those elements myself, as a scuba diving instructor.

Herzog appears to put his cards on the table in this one: the step that humanity made between hunter-gathering and settled farming (or civilisation) is what started the ecological destruction of our planet. But this film is more than that.

As always, Herzog is celebrating the beauty of our world and of our inner life with fantastic camera work. Just enjoy it. That is enough. lf it makes you swap your car for public transport, and you decide to use fewer aeroplanes and plastics, then good on you. But the beauty of the light and colour shining through the ice, and the grace of the floating astronauts is more than that.

Buyer Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - not his best
l'd say that "The Wild Blue Yonder" isn't Herzog's best film. lt lacks the passion that l find in other films of his, but some of the visuals are worth it. For Herzog fans, l think it's worth seeing, if for no other reason than to gain further insight to his film making and style.

by John Steinbeck

Average customer rating: 4.5 ISBN: 0142000663
When The Grapes of Wrath was published in 1939, America, still recovering from the Great Depression, came face to face with itself in a startling, lyrical way. John Steinbeck gathered the country's recent shames and devastations--the Hoovervilles, the desperate, dirty children, the dissolution of kin, the oppressive labor conditions--in the Joad family. Then he set them down on a westward-running road, local dialect and all, for the world to acknowledge. For this marvel of observation and perception, he won the Pulitzer in 1940.

The prize must have come, at least in part, because alongside the poverty and dispossession, Steinbeck chronicled the Joads' refusal, even inability, to let go of their faltering but unmistakable hold on human dignity. Witnessing their degeneration from Oklahoma farmers to a diminished band of migrant workers is nothing short of crushing. The Joads lose family members to death and cowardice as they go, and are challenged by everything from weather to the authorities to the California locals themselves. As Tom Joad puts it: "They're a-workin' away at our spirits. They're a tryin' to make us cringe an' crawl like a whipped bitch. They tryin' to break us. Why, Jesus Christ, Ma, they comes a time when the on'y way a fella can keep his decency is by takin' a sock at a cop. They're workin' on our decency."

The point, though, is that decency remains intact, if somewhat battle-scarred, and this, as much as the depression and the plight of the "Okies," is a part of American history. When the California of their dreams proves to be less than edenic, Ma tells Tom: "You got to have patience. Why, Tom--us people will go on livin' when all them people is gone. Why, Tom, we're the people that live. They ain't gonna wipe us out. Why, we're the people--we go on." It's almost as if she's talking about the very novel she inhabits, for Steinbeck's characters, more than most literary creations, do go on. They continue, now as much as ever, to illuminate and humanize an era for generations of readers who, thankfully, have no experiential point of reference for understanding the depression. The book's final, haunting image of Rose of Sharon--Rosasharn, as they call her--the eldest Joad daughter, forcing the milk intended for her stillborn baby onto a starving stranger, is a lesson on the grandest scale. "'You got to,'" she says, simply. And so do we all. --Melanie Rehak

Norton Confidential safeguards against online identity theft, protecting your confidential information from fraudulent phishing Web sites and crimeware before login, purchase, or any online interaction. Norton Confidential protects you when you’re most vulnerable: at a Web site while banking or shopping online, and about to submit passwords, account numbers, or other confidential information.

Norton Confidential automatically inspects Web sites—and potentially dangerous or identity-stealing programs on your PC—for known threats and suspicious behavior before you log in, make a purchase, or otherwise interact with them. If a threat is detected, Norton Confidential protects your passwords and other confidential information from an attack—such as getting phished by fraudulent Web sites, or having your keystrokes secretly recorded by identity thieves.

When you visit a Web site on the Internet, domain servers translate the domain name into an IP addresses. View larger.

In a pharming scam, a criminal programer hacks into a domain server and sends you to a fake Web site, which could trick you into submitting a username and password. To prevent pharming, Norton Confidential gives you a visual confirmation that a Web page has been verified as belonging to the company represented. View larger.

Anti-Phishing Fraudulent Web Site Protection
Norton Confidential includes an Internet Explorer Toolbar Plug-in that helps you to see Web page risk status at any time. The software filters and blocks phishing Web sites to help ensure you do not inadvertently give personal information to a fraudulent site. Norton Confidential provides a visual categorization for authentic sites, good sites, suspicious sites, and bad sites, making it easy for you to know status as you shop and browse online.

Anti-Pharming Protection
In addition to blocking fraudulent or suspicious sites, Norton Confidential authenticates top banking and shopping transaction sites to provide a global multi-layer shielding protection. You'll get a visual confirmation that a Web page has been verified by Symantec as belonging to the company represented—or in simple terms, the site is really who it says it is.

Signature and Behavioral Crimeware Blocking
Norton Confidential protects users from hidden crimeware designed to steal confidential or personally identifying information. While detecting and removing known threats, there is minimal disruption for the user—Norton Confidential works in the background. Norton Confidential is designed to coexist with Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security in addition to competitive antivirus and Internet security solutions. Even if you already use one layer of computer protection, Norton Confidential adds another layer of protection, specifically for online threats with financial damage potential.

InfoVault Login and Password Protection
Norton Confidential automatically detects, stores and protects your logins and passwords. You can then use one "master" password instead of countless individual Web site logins; individual passwords and protected by the master password. Norton Confidential prevents users from inadvertently sending password and login information to unauthorized sites, and provides convenient way to migrate stored passwords from Norton Password Manager.

A Real-time Integrated Solution
Norton Confidential is one of the only fully integrated solution that protects against both phishing and crimeware at the point of transaction. Most solutions provide protection against one vector requiring users to "piece together" their safety status and/or are not "transaction sensitive".

Intelligent Prevention
Norton Confidential uses advanced heuristics to provide zero-hour protection from online identity theft without requiring known phishing URLs or crimeware definitions. Other solutions rely heavily on signatures, which are insufficient for protection from quickly evolving threats.

Effortless Protection
Norton Confidential is the only solution that allows you to complete their transactions uninterrupted by offering behavior blocking technology that prevents suspicious applications from capturing sensitive information.

For Your Eyes Only
Password protection prevents you from accidentally submitting your passwords to unauthorized sites—providing a failsafe against emerging phishing attacks.

Symantec Response Expertise
Norton Confidential is the only consumer security solution that authenticates secure Web sites and does so without requiring the Web sites to make any changes to their sites. Symantec Response team on-going Web site profiling delivers in-depth protection for popular banking, shopping and eCommerce sites.
