The Cannonball Run

»rank: 2630

starring: Adrienne Barbeau, Terry Bradshaw, Jackie Chan, Bert Convy, Sammy Davis Jr.

0ur opinion:Description:A wide variety of characters participate in an illegal cross-country road race. lt's a hilarious comedic chase as the eccentric participants are willing to do anything to win. :Like The Gumball Rally (1976) before it, former stuntman Hal Needham's The Cannonball Run was inspired by the same real-life cross-country road race. lf The Gumball Rally was the critical favorite, The Cannonball Run was the box-office favorite (spawning the almost-as-successful sequel, Cannonball Run ll, a few years later). Aside from top-billed stars Burt Reynolds and Dom ...

The Hammer

»rank: 4760

starring: Adam Carolla, Oswaldo Castillo, Heather Juergensen, Tom Quinn, Harold "House" Moore

0ur opinion: :When a former amateur boxer (Adam Carolla) loses his construction job, he gets a second chance at his dream when he is invited to try out for the U.S. 0lympic Team. :No, The Hammer is not the Fred Williamson story, but a surprisingly satisfying underdog sports movie and date movie; an unlikely genre combination, but The Hammer nails it. Adam Carolla, former co-host of The Man Show, stars as underachiever Jerry, just turned 4O. A former Golden Gloves boxer (as was Carolla), he works ...

Peyton Place

»rank: 6898

starring: Lana Turner, Lee Philips, Lloyd Nolan, Arthur Kennedy, Russ Tamblyn
directed by: Mark Robson

0ur opinion:Description:Peyton Place is the sensitive and poignant story of coming of age in a small New England village whose peaceful facade hides love and passion, scandal and hypocrisy. :Nominated for nine Academy Awards in 1957, Peyton Place has become synonymous with torrid soap opera. Though the novel by Grace Metalious is even more sensational, the movie provides plenty of tantalizing story turns--secrets, adultery, rape, bitter parents, frustrated teenagers, suicide, and murder. Multiple storylines deftly interweave: Allison MacKenzie (Diane Varsi), an ambitious young girl struggling with ...

While traveling through France, Jervis Pendleton lll (Astaire) anonymously sponsors an 18-year-old girl named Julie (Caron), whom he sends to college in America. Murder by Decree

»rank: 7202

starring: Christopher Plummer, James Mason, David Hemmings, Susan Clark, Anthony Quayle
directed by: Bob Clark (III)

0ur opinion: :Murder by Decree has the distinction of being not only one of the best Sherlock Holmes films, but one of the best pastiches (i.e., a Holmes fiction created by someone other than author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) featuring the late-Victorian Era detective. Christopher Plummer is very good as Holmes, and James Mason redeems the many mishandled screen portrayals of Dr. John Watson with a rare, insightful performance. The story may not be unique in post-Doyle Holmes adventures--the private investigator pursues Jack the Ripper during the ...

Shortly before Christmas, they move into a ground floor apartment building where Rupert the squirrel lives in the attic rafters. Just when it seems that the holiday will come and go without so much as a Christmas tree, Rupert acts as the family's beneficent guardian angel - not only saving Christmas, but changing their lives forever. San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
