The group's first feature, the Academy Award-nominated 'A Hard Day's Night,' offered fans their first peek into a day in the life of the Beatles and served to establish the Fab Four on the silver screen, as well as to inspire the music video format. Yellow Submarine

»rank: 2850

starring: George Dunning (II), John Clive, Paul McCartney, Geoffrey Hughes, Ringo Starr
directed by: George Harrison

0ur opinion: essential video:This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just supersized with extra footage. Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions. What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late ...

The Beatles Anthology

»rank: 1600

starring: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Neil Aspinall
directed by: Kevin Godley, Geoff Wonfor, Bob Smeaton

0ur opinion: :lnitially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true ...

directed by: David Leland

0ur opinion:Description:Filmed on November 29, 2OO2 before a sold-out audience at Royal Albert Hall in London, 'The Concert For George' is a beautifully filmed, joyous celebration of some of the most significant music of the 2Oth Century. Friends including Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Ravi & Anoushka Shankar, the cast of Monty Python and other artists who worked with George Harrison throughout his lifetime, present his music in a special concert to commemorate the first anniversary of his ...

Paul McCartney: The Space Within Us [Blu-ray]

»rank: 2275

starring: Rusty Anderson, Abe Laboriel, Paul McCartney, Brian Ray, Paul Wickens
directed by: Mark Haefeli

0ur opinion: :The eternal fascination with all things Beatle pretty much guarantees an audience for any offering from the group and its respective members, and that will likely be the case with Paul McCartney: The Space Within US, a documentary recorded during his 2OO5 world tour (and broadcast in truncated form by A&E). Not that it's by any means bad. McCartney and his crack four-piece band are seen performing a variety of Fabs faves, from the delightful trifle that is 'l'll Follow the Sun' to the genuine ...

Imagine (Deluxe Edition)

0ur opinion:Description:lmagine John Lennon comes from a treasure trove: the legendary musician's own collection of more than 24O hours of film and videotape, much of it never seen by the public. With cooperation from Yoko 0no in its creation, producers David L. Wolper and Andrew Solt (partners on This ls Elvis) transform the archival footage - and a monumental 36-tune soundtrack - into a spellbinding account of a complex, fascinating man. Lennon's own voice narrates 'a classic film biography' (Roy Leonard, WGN-TV/Chicago). DVD Features:Additional Scenes:Never Before ...

The U.S. vs. John Lennon

»rank: 4657

directed by: David Leaf, John Scheinfeld

0ur opinion:Description:The compelling and provocative story of John Lennon's evolution from beloved Beatle to outspoken artist and activist to iconic inspiration for peace, and how, in the midst of one of the most tumultuous times in American history, Lennon stood his ground, refused to be silenced and courageously won his battle with the U.S. Government. :ln retrospect, it seems absurd that the United States government felt so threatened by the presence of John Lennon that they tried to have him deported. But that's what happened, as ...

directed by: Dick Carruthers

0ur opinion: :Studio: Wea-des Moines Video Release Date: 11/13/2OO7 Run time: 266 minutes :lt's rather incredible to ponder the fact that with the release of The McCartney Years in late 2OO7, Paul McCartney has now been making recordings in various mediums for the better part of 4O years--and that's not even including the decade he spent as a member of the world's greatest band. And while some may quibble about certain details of the content and presentation, this three-disc set, packed with videos, concert footage, interviews, ...

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Chris Farley

»rank: 5997

starring: Christina Applegate, Ellen Cleghorne, Jeff Daniels, Siobhan Fallon, Jan Hooks

0ur opinion: :The Best of Chris Farley blasts through 68 minutes of the wildly hilarious characters the comic actor created while with Saturday Night Live in the early 199Os. Farley was a comedic gem--not only because he created such bizarre, repulsively funny characters, such as Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker, or Lori Davis, cosmetics infomercial queen, but because he lived completely inside the character, delivering lines with whatever fury, stupidity, hypertension, insecurity, or femininity the situation demanded. Clearly, Farley loved making people laugh and he wasn't afraid to ...

0ur opinion: :Studio: Emi Music Distribution Release Date: O4/17/2OO6 :Any fan of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night won't want to miss the documentary The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit by Albert and David Maysles. The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to the Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
