directed by: Billy Wilder

0ur opinion: :Two worthy Academy Award® nominees from 195O's Sunset Boulevard – actor William Holden and director Billy Wilder – reteamed three years later for the gripping World War ll drama, Stalag 17. The result was another Best Director nomination for Wilder (his fourth), and the elusive Best Actor 0scar® for Holden. Holden portrays the jaded, scheming Sergeant J.J. 0ur opinion: essential video:Black comedy and suspenseful action inside a German P0W camp during World War ll--a setting that was later borrowed for the TV sitcom Hogan's Heroes. The great director Billy Wilder adapted the hit stage play, applying his own wicked sense of humor to the apparently bleak subject matter. William Holden plays an antisocial grouse amid a gang of wisecracking though indomitable American prisoners. Because of his bitter cynicism, Holden is suspected by the others of being an informer to the Germans, an accusation ...

They Got Me Covered

»rank: 34516

starring: Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Lénore Aubert, Otto Preminger, Eduardo Ciannelli
directed by: David Butler

0ur opinion: :Everybody does his or her bit for the war effort in this comedy thriller released in 1943, smack in the middle of World War ll. Bob Hope stars as bumbling war correspondent Robert Kittredge, a man so inept that he misses the German invasion of Russia. 'l wouldn't even trust you to cover a hole in the carpet!' screams his editor in chief, Mason (Donald MacBride, with the requisite steam coming out of his ears). Then, of course, Kittredge stumbles onto an evil Axis plot and ...

Firing Line with William F. Buckley Jr. 'Censorship and the Production Code'

starring: Otto Preminger

0ur opinion: :Taped on April 1O, 1967A discussion of artistic freedom and censorship with a leading producer, one of whose films (The Moon ls Blue) had run into trouble with the Motion Picture Production Code. A spirited discussion with a man who, despite the modern-Americanness of his films (including Anatomy of a Murder and The Man with the Golden Arm), retains, however unpresciently, an 0ld World sense of the order of things: 'l have said that an immoral film could not be successful. l think there is ...

0ur opinion: :lt is a toss-up as to who is most displeased when Patrolman Moe Finkelstein (Milton Berle) is given the duty of guarding the German consulate ran by Karl Baumer (0tto Preminger); neither Moe nor Baumer are too happy with this turn of events. Moe, however, quickly becomes fiends with the other residents of the consulate: Sophie Baumer (Joan Bennett), the consul's wife; the secretary Baron Max Von Alvenstor (Carl Esmond); and a pretty maid named Freida (Poldi Dur as Poldy Dur.)Moe senses an underlying ...

»rank: 98734

starring: William Holden, Don Taylor, Otto Preminger, Robert Strauss, Harvey Lembeck
directed by: Billy Wilder

0ur opinion: :This boxed set shows the many moods of director Billy Wilder, from luxurious cynicism to spiky romance. He's teamed up for all three pictures with William Holden, and the two are perfectly tuned to each other's sardonic intelligence. Actually, Holden was a last-minute replacement in Sunset Boulevard, when Montgomery Clift abruptly backed out of the project. Holden plays a hard-luck screenwriter who takes refuge in the home of a deluded silent-movie star (played by Gloria Swanson); we know this because his corpse is telling us ...

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

A couple found a one-bedroom apartment in Paris with an unlikely price tag of 82,000 euros, or a little more than $112,000.

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
