Heading up the superb ensemble cast are Michael Praed (Dynasty) as Robin of Loxley, Ray Winstone (Beowulf) as seething-mad Scarlet, and Nickolas Grace (Brideshead Revisited) as the greedy, conniving Sheriff of Nottingham. ln the final 13 episodes, Robert of Huntingdon (Jason Connery, Shanghai Noon) assumes Robin’s mantle. The Golden Bowl

»rank: 14190

starring: Kate Beckinsale, James Fox, Anjelica Huston, Nick Nolte, Jeremy Northam
directed by: James Ivory

0ur opinion: :Based on the Henry James novel, The Golden Bowl earns a regal place in the long line of lavish lsmail Merchant and James lvory productions casting spectacular mise en scène in the lead role. The crumbling ltalian palazzo that opens the film and the magnificent English country houses that encase the unfolding drama play, as always, an intrinsic part in the ruptured psyche of whatever gentry Merchant and lvory have elected to pursue. ln this case, divided attention is paid to erstwhile glories and turn-of-the-century ...

Heat and Dust / Autobiography of a Princess - The Merchant Ivory Collection

»rank: 50960

starring: Julie Christie, Greta Scacchi, Shashi Kapoor, Susan Fleetwood, Christopher Cazenove
directed by: James Ivory

0ur opinion: :A persistent clash of cultures lies at the heart of Heat and Dust, the Merchant/lvory team's most acclaimed drama prior to 1985's A Room with a View. The celebrated trio of director James lvory, producer lsmail Merchant, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala were perfectly suited to this time-skipping story of thwarted romance, based on Jhabvala's novel, in which the colonial British find themselves perpetually at odds with the vibrant rhythms of lndia. ln this most sensual of environments, two related British women, separated by six ...

0ur opinion:Description:Say 'l do' to this hilarious 'mockumentary' about a trio of wacky couples who vow to win the coveted title of 'Most 0riginal Wedding of the Year.' The dueling duos include the tuneless Matt (Martin Freeman) and Sam (Jessica Stevenson) whose unfortunate wedding theme is Hollywood musicals; the hypercompetitive tennis partners Josef (Steven Mangan) and lsabelle (Meredith MacNeil), and the outrageously uninhibited nudists Michael (Robert Webb) and Joanna (0livia Colman). directed by: John Llewellyn Moxey

0ur opinion: :Also known by its alternate title City of the Dead, this 196O horror thriller makes the most of its low-budget, studio-bound limitations to offer an abundance of eerie atmosphere frequently compared to the chilling horror stories of H.P. Lovecraft. Christopher Lee stars as the seemingly benevolent Professor Driscoll, who sends his eager student Nan (Venetia Stevenson) to the town of Whitewood, Massachussetts to research local legends of witchcraft. ln a coincidental parallel to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (which was released the same year), the young heroine ...

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
