The Fox and the Hound (A Walt Disney Classic)
»rank: 2272
0ur opinion: :The Fox and the Hound marked the last collaboration between Disney's older artists, including three of the 'Nine 0ld Men' (Frank Thomas, 0llie Johnston, and Woolie Reitherman), and the young animators who would make the record-breaking films of the '9Os. Based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix, the film tells the story of a bloodhound puppy and a fox kit who begin as friends but are forced to become enemies. Tod and Copper barely establish their friendship before Copper begins his training as hunting ...

Pete's Dragon
»rank: 1309
0ur opinion: :Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. Not for anybody over the age of ten. --Tom Keogh

The Andy Hardy Collection - Life Begins for Andy Hardy
»rank: 1850
0ur opinion: :Given the namby-pamby reputation of the Andy Hardy series--always thought of as a paradigm for upbeat, Depression-era middle America--this is a film with a surprising mix of tones, as Andy tries life on his own. Having graduated from high school and kissed his girlfriend Polly (Ann Rutherford) goodbye when she left for the summer, Andy has to figure out what to do with his own life. His father wants him to go to college and become a lawyer, but Andy wants to put off college ...

The Year Without a Santa Claus
»rank: 266
0ur opinion: :Even Santa can suffer a case of the holiday blues. ln this 1974 stop-motion holiday family favorite, a sparkly eyed Mrs. Claus (voiced by Shirley Booth) sings and tells about the year her hubby felt too weary and too unappreciated to prepare for his annual Christmas rounds. Mickey Rooney stars as the voice of Santa, a rosy-nosed puppet who travels incognito to Southtown in search of his tiniest reindeer, Vixen, and two well-meaning elves. Seems Mrs. Santa sent them to find proof of Christmas spirit--but all they've ...

Santa Claus Is Coming to Town
»rank: 676
0ur opinion: :This 53-minute, 197O animated film may be the most delightful of those sundry, stop-motion animated Christmas perennials that show up on television during the holidays. The clay animation production, boasting a wonderful musical score and art direction that occasionally underscores the flower-power era in which it was born, tells the story of Santa's origins, in which Kris Kringle decides to get toys into the hands of poor children in gloomy Sombertown. Charmingly narrated by Fred Astaire and featuring voices by Mickey Rooney and Keenan ...

Thousands Cheer
»rank: 1700
0ur opinion: :The second half of this 1943 Technicolor musical is an excuse for MGM's contract talent to perform songs and sketches in a big show at an Army base. Unfortunately, more than an hour passes before the show arrives, stranding the viewer with a thin service comedy about an opera singer (Kathryn Grayson) tagging along to a military camp in hopes of reuniting her estranged parents, whose names are Bill and Hillary (no comments, please). Romance comes in the form of private Gene Kelly, a former ...
