Which Way Is Up
»rank: 9151
0ur opinion: :This 1977 American variation on Lina Wertmuller's The Seduction of Mimi, the story of a stupid man's troubles in sex and politics, is a run-of-the-mill Richard Pryor vehicle. Noteworthy only for its casting of two good actresses, Lonette McKee and Margaret Avery, and Pryor's multiple roles as an orange picker, a lecherous old man, and a minister, the film is made without a lot of care or effort to rise to Wertmuller's satiric accomplishment. --Tom Keogh

Krush Groove
»rank: 9756
0ur opinion: :Like its progenitors Beat Street and Wild Style, Krush Groove is a movie about hip-hop that in its rush to document an emergent culture ignores plot, acting, cinematography, and anything else that makes a movie watchable or worthwhile. That said, Krush Groove contains some nifty performances from hip-hop legends Run-DMC, the always hilarious Fat Boys (see Disorderlies if you can't get enough of their weighty shtick), brilliant MC Kurtis Blow, and Prince protégé Sheila E. Also look out for soon-to-be L.A. Law-yer Blair Underwood in ...

The Last Dragon
»rank: 20950
0ur opinion: :Get ready for some seriously big hair. The Last Dragon--or, to call it by its full title, Berry Gordy's the Last Dragon--is a stunning example of 198Os camp cinema. 0ne-name kung fu wonder Taimak plays Leroy Green, a.k.a. Bruce Leroy, a humble student of kung fu who has achieved the highest level of skill, but hasn't yet found his inner master. Wandering through the streets of New York in a Chinese peasant outfit, he accidentally becomes the protector of nightclub hostess/video jockey Laura Charles (played ...

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
»rank: 15622
0ur opinion: :lf it weren't for a couple of inspired performances, as well as the time-capsule weirdness of it all, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band would be definitively unwatchable. This misguided effort to dramatize the classic Beatles album (the Fab Four had nothing to do with it, thank goodness) also includes tunes from other Beatles LPs, strung together in lumbering '7Os rock-opera style. Peter Frampton, then at the crest of his brief run at the top, stars as Billy Shears, with the Bee Gees wearing the ...

Greased Lightning
»rank: 964
0ur opinion: :Sold as a comedy, this film was really a biopic about Wendell Scott, the first African American to break through on the auto-racing circuit. Richard Pryor (working from a script cowritten by Melvin Van Peebles) conveys the determination and long-suffering humor of a man who battles racial prejudice to pursue the sport he loves. But the material is plodding and Pryor can't elevate it. Nor can director Michael Schultz turn all of those behind-the-wheels scenes into actual cinematic excitement. Still, in rare moments, Pryor (working ...
