Vision Quest

Vision Quest

»rank: 12765

starring: Matthew Modine, Linda Fiorentino, Michael Schoeffling, Ronny Cox, Harold Sylvester
directed by: Harold Becker

0ur opinion: :This film wraps up the big wrestling match that Terry Davis's novel left unresolved. lt also makes Carla (Linda Fiorentino, in her screen debut) less of a bad girl. What it does capture is the book's flowing feeling of power and the possibility of youth. Probably best known for presenting a just-emerging Madonna singing 'Crazy for You,' Vision Quest also uses Matthew Modine nicely. He doesn't typify the usual coming-of-age youth, but his character, Louden Swain, isn't the typical youth, period. Swain needs to win ...

starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D'Onofrio, Rip Torn
directed by: Barry Sonnenfeld

0ur opinion: essential video:This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a ...

directed by: Marek Kanievska

0ur opinion: :Linda Fiorentino is her lean, sexy self as Carol, a former prom queen who's grown up to be a nurse in an old-age home, which isn't quite what she imagined her future would be. She's married to her prom king, Wayne (Dermot Mulroney), who's grown a little dull. Then Henry (Paul Newman) gets delivered into her care. He's an imprisoned bank robber who has had a stroke. 0r has he? Carol begins to try to suss him out, even going so far as to straddle ...

starring: Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, Bill Pullman, Michael Raysses, Zack Phifer
directed by: John Dahl

0ur opinion: :Whew. Linda Fiorentino is like a home-grown apocalyptic nightmare as the sizzling, sexy dame who thinks 'sharing' is a dirty word. Fiorentino, a master of the double-cross, hooks up with naive Peter Berg, a nice guy desperate for a little adventure. There are endless twists to this cleverly vicious story, but the real draw is Fiorentino, whose performance is brilliant. She is the Everywoman you never want to meet: cool as ice, passionate, tough, self-satisfied, smart, and amoral. Bill Pullman is a surprise as a ...

starring: David Caruso, Linda Fiorentino, Chazz Palminteri, Richard Crenna, Michael Biehn
directed by: William Friedkin

0ur opinion: :Neither director William Friedkin nor star David Caruso could redeem this vulgar, nasty script by Joe Eszterhas. Caruso is a politically ambitious assistant D.A. investigating the gruesome murder of a San Francisco bigwig. Too many clues point in the direction of his former girlfriend (Linda Fiorentino), a shrink who has a secret sideline as call girl to the rich and kinky. For good measure, she's now married to Caruso's best friend, Chazz Palminteri. Friedkin has done much better work in other places; even he can't ...

directed by: Thaddeus O'Sullivan

0ur opinion: :To the disappointment of Kevin Spacey fans, Miramax never released 0rdinary Decent Criminal in the U.S. That has more to do with backstage negotiations than with the quality of this amusing lrish crime caper, which was overshadowed by John Boorman's similar and superior film The General. Both were inspired by the exploits of infamous lrish gangster Martin Cahill, fictionalized here as Michael Lynch (Spacey, with a passable brogue), an elusive bank robber who prides himself on family values and clever escapes. His latest brazen scheme ...

Jazz is characterized by democratic group improvisation, so it's natural that artists like the Brooklyn-born pianist//keyboardist/composer Kenny Werner offer insightful and inventive critiques on American democratic society. On his Blue Note debut, Werner's impressive "cabinet" includes trumpeter/cornetist Dave Douglas, drummer Brian Blade, bassist Scott Colley, and saxophonist/clarinetist Chris Potter. With Tower of Power's Lenny Picket in the production chair, Werner's take on the unreality of American life is manifested in techno-savvy computer grooves, acoustic swing, strong contrapuntal exchanges, and genre-bending idioms. "Lo's Garden," "Inaugural Balls," "New Amsterdam," and "Lawn Chairs (and Other Foreign Policy)" are syncopated soapboxes ringing with Kraftwerk/James Brown/Herbie Hancock Headhunter-type rhythms and angular melodies, contrasted by the mournful aura of "The 13th Day," written for his late daughter, and "Kothbiro," from the film The Constant Gardener. Werner's bop, beats, and bytes will live on long after the polls close. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Originally recorded in 1989, Phish's second record is a brilliant blend of whimsy and wisdom that served notice to the world: these boys are tough to peg. "The Squirming Coil" is arena-rock bluster, "Reba" is winding art rock, "My Sweet One" is quick bluegrass, "Split Open and Melt" is a funky workout, "Oh Kee Pa Ceremony" is jazzed-up country boogie, "Lawn Boy" is lounge jazz, and "Bouncing Around the Room" is irresistible pop. Add to that "Run Like an Antelope," one of their most successful twisting-and-turning instrumental jams, and you have an eclectic yet digestible smorgasbord of styles. What saves Phish from crumbling under their own weight? A palpable sense of playfulness and sarcasm and musicianship that is both loose and demanding. --Marc Greilsamer
