Shadowlands (1993)

Shadowlands (1993)

»rank: 75

starring: Julian Fellowes, Roddy Maude-Roxby, Michael Denison, Andrew Seear, Tim McMullan
directed by: Richard Attenborough

0ur opinion: essential video:This emotionally moving romantic drama was adapted by William Nicholson from his own acclaimed play, based upon the real-life romance (during the 195Os) between the British writer C.S. Lewis and a divorced American poet named Joy Gresham. Best known for writing The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) is living comfortably as a respected 0xford don, his academic lifestyle a kind of shell protecting him from the emotional risk of love. Joy Gresham ...

starring: Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour, Ian McKellen, James Villiers, Eleanor David
directed by: Clive Donner

0ur opinion: :lt's tough trying to beat the 1934 version of the popular adventure-romance story, starring Leslie Howard as the 18th-century British hero who poses as a fop in London society but runs a secret mission to rescue the doomed in Robespierre's Paris. But this 1982 television version, starring Anthony Andrews (Under the Volcano) as the Pimpernel and Jane Seymour as his beloved but estranged wife, is quite a treat. Andrews and Seymour expertly capture the essence of a relationship ...

0ur opinion: :Pierce Brosnan returns for his second stint as James Bond (after GoldenEye), and he's doing it in high style with an invigorating cast of costars. lt's only appropriate that a Bond film from 1997 would find Agent OO7 pitted against a media mogul (Jonathan Pryce) who's going to start a global war (beginning with stolen nuclear missiles aimed at China) to create attention-grabbing headlines for his latest multimedia news channel. lt's the information age run amok, and Bond ...

starring: Serena Gordon, Alun Armstrong, Geraldine Somerville, Ben Daniels, Julian Fellowes
directed by: David Caffrey (II)

0ur opinion: :At one point during The Aristocrats, the dutiful, devoted, yet rather dim husband of Louisa Lennox cannot find the word to describe the magnificent party they are attending. 'Resplendent,' his wife offers. That pretty much describes this impeccably mounted BBC miniseries. Based on the biography by Stella Tillyard, The Aristocrats vividly re-creates 'a different world' that would eventually be shattered by rebellion and bloodshed. 'The much pampered' Emily Lennox narrates her family's history, as tumultuous as it was ...

0ur opinion: :For those who have relished the first two installments of Barbara Taylor Bradford's beloved Emma Harte trilogy, To Be the Best offers a satisfying close to the story. Viewers should begin with A Woman of Substance, in which Emma, determined to ruin the upper-class family who wronged her, achieves her dream of becoming one of the richest women in the world. Next is Hold the Dream, in which Emma's granddaughter Paula inherits her retail empire and struggles to ...

0ur opinion: :The final installment of the House of Cards trilogy strikes a more somber note than its predecessors. Francis Urquhart--prime minister and murderer--has almost overtaken Margaret Thatcher to become Britain's longest serving postwar leader, but the public is tiring of him and there are rumblings of dissent in the Conservative Party. When the prime minister's bullying goes too far, his foreign secretary, Tom Makepeace, resigns and prepares to challenge for the leadership. Urquhart and his wife (who makes Lady ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
