Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Two-Disc Special Edition)

»rank: 8276

starring: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal, Sandy Dennis, Frank Flanagan
directed by: Mike Nichols

0ur opinion: :Mike Nichols' first directorial effort represents a milestone in psychological realism and 'foul' language in American cinema. George and Martha as played superbly and without vanity by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are as far from the bourgeois 195Os perfect married couple as you can get alternatively badgering berating abusing and loving each other both alone and accompanied by the naive young married couple that have come over for a nightcap (portrayed ...

Look Who's Talking Now

»rank: 14618

starring: John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, David Gallagher, Tabitha Lupien, Lysette Anthony
directed by: Tom Ropelewski

0ur opinion: :The last film in the minifranchise goes to the dogs, literally, to keep the series' major gimmick intact--letting the audience hear the thoughts of the little newcomers in the Ubriacco family. The kids who were once babies in the two prior films can now babble for themselves, so the script finds the adult characters taking in two mutts who do a 'Lady and the Tramp' thing while we listen in. Travolta (rescued a ...

He makes a deal with a dowdy colleague (Streisand) that they provide companionship for one another, with no thought of getting into bed. She agrees but soon becomes frustrated, the agreement only reinforcing her unfulfilled desire to have a complete relationship with a man. Mimi Rogers is on hand as Babs's ...

0ur opinion: :Carrey is a misguided cable installer whose attempts at male bonding with bachelor Broderick are hazardous to the latter's health.Genre: Feature Film-ComedyRating: PG13Release Date: 1-APR-2OO3Media Type: DVD :lf you think Jim Carrey's comedy is an acquired taste, think of The Cable Guy as a potent bottle of bittersweet wine. San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
