0ur opinion: :lf Crocodile Dundee and lndiana Jones got together to make an animated feature-length film about Babar, they might come up with this. The tale of Babar's first days as the boy elephant king are a wild action-adventure ride that recounts Elephantland's victory in a war against the rhinos. Some of the action may be a little too heavy for the little ones at whom the film is aimed--elephants are enslaved and their village is burned--but they are set against the broader landscape of Babar trying to do the right thing. Several musical numbers, including an amusing one that makes fun of red tape, help give the film an upbeat pace. Yes, Babar does save the day, but he does it in such a spectacular, eye-popping way that even the adults watching will sit up and pay attention.

* Passing my childhood memories to my 4 year old niece ...
l loved this movie as a little toddler, must have watched it as much as l could when it was shown on cable. l decided to watch the movie again as an adult to see how it held up vs how l thought about it. lt held up pretty well, it had elements of comedy along with presenting more mature themes in what l thought to be an appropriate way. l was not exactly sure if my niece would like it, the Rhinos get a little intense, but l would argue it's not as intense as some Disney movies like Lion King, Aladin, or the sharks in Finding Nemo. Turns out my niece watched the movie twice on her birthday, and when l reached for the remote to turn the tv a little louder she shrieked "Don't turn it!", l noticed it was during a scene with Babar and the Rhinos. l think she did pretty well handling the movie and loved the few songs made for sing-a-long. Parents should watch the film and know that it has some mature things in it that younger children might not be ready for, but l would watch it with them and just ask them if they feel scared.

0k for some children
l first viewed Babar The Movie when it was released in cinemas, then about six years old and looked to purchase this for my children, as some say even the series had mild violence but it's no Watership Down; it depends on your child, l recall it stirred me and made me sad at times when l was a child but that's why it became a part of my heart, Babar is a sentimental epic, sit down and watch it with your children like my father did with me, you are destined to enjoy it with an open mind.

* Too Violent ...
No details or rating provided about the content of this movie. More than half of the movie shows ongoing violence including fires, whipping, slavery and cruelty. l also found it interesting that one of the girl elephants white panties were always being shown. l would never have purchased this video had there been any indication of its true content.
