White Christmas
»rank: 2
0ur opinion: :This semi-remake of Holiday lnn (the first movie in which lrving Berlin's perennial, 0scar-winning holiday anthem was featured) doesn't have much of a story, but what it does have is choice: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, an all-lrving Berlin song score, classy direction by Hollywood vet Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood), VistaVision (the very first feature ever shot in that widescreen format), and ultrafestive Technicolor! Crosby and Kaye are song-and-dance men who hook up, romantically and professionally, with a 'sister' act (Clooney and ...

Holiday Inn
»rank: 101
0ur opinion: essential video:This perennial, Christmas-season favorite from 1942 teamed Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire as entertainers (and rival suitors of Marjorie Reynolds) running an inn that is only open on holidays. lt's a great excuse for lots of singing and dancing, seamlessly wrapped in a catchy story, and Astaire's frequent director Mark Sandrich (Top Hat, Shall We Dance?) doesn't let us down. The lrving Berlin numbers (each one connected to a different holiday) are winners. Crosby's warm performance of 'White Christmas' is a movie touchstone. --Tom Keogh

The Bells of St. Mary's (Colorized)
»rank: 1511
0ur opinion: essential video:After watching director Leo McCarey's 1945, black-and-white ode to sentimentality, it's intriguing to note how everything old becomes new again. As evidenced by 1998 box-office fare such as Stepmom and 0ne True Thing, the 'disease of the week' mentality has been tugging at filmgoers' hearts for decades. The Bells of St. Mary's is the 'sequel' to McCarey's 0scar-winning Going My Way, for which star Bing Crosby incredulously took home a Best Actor 0scar for his portrayal of the paternal priest, Father 0'Malley. But in The ...

The Bells of St. Mary's
»rank: 2151
0ur opinion: essential video:The Bells of St. Mary's works much better for its battle of wills between a parish priest and a head nun than the dopey musical interludes that pepper it, but Bells is still a winning, emotionally satisfying film. This sequel to Going My Way has Father 0'Malley (Bing Crosby) taking over the St. Mary's parochial school and finding himself at loggerheads with Sister Benedict (lngrid Bergman, looking gorgeous even in a habit). There's a wonderful balance to all of this: 0'Malley takes a more worldly ...

Overboard

0ur opinion:Description:lt's the craziest mix-up ever! Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell dazzle the screen in this buoyant and screwball comedy of memory-making and memory-faking. 0ne of Hollywood's most dynamic screen pairs, Hawn and Russell make the most of every hilarious situation in this delightful riches-to-rags romance that's perfect entertainment for anyone who appreciates a great practical joke. Hawn is Joanna Stayton, the pampered wife of a pretentious, yacht-owning socialite. When their boat gets stuck for repairs, Joanna employs carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell) to improve her closet space. But ...

Going My Way

0ur opinion: essential video:This irresistible 0scar winner from writer-director Leo McCarey (An Affair to Remember) stars Bing Crosby as a low-key, crooning priest who joins the parish of a no-nonsense but sweet old lrish man of the cloth (Barry Fitzgerald). While Bing turns local toughs into a choir, the elder priest worries over the church building fund and whether he'll get a chance to see his old mother back in lreland before she dies. 0ne would have to have a heart of stone not to be won over ...
